RIT Summer Internship Blog

We actually finished all 12 outlines today!! It was thrilling. Paige and I have been cutting our 65 page presentation down to, what is now a 32 page one. Dave and David Lewis still think we need to cut it down and I'm upset about it. 15 minutes isn't enough time to explain everything we've done these past few weeks and it's sad that all of our work isn't going to be displayed. There isn't a whole lot to be said about today, other than we worked on our presentation. Tomorrow we're giving a practice presentation tomorrow with Dave and Roger. That will probably be most of my blog tomorrow.

I'm sorry about the late blog post but I've been quite busy today. The group read mine and Paige's outline during the morning meeting. She keeps telling me I don't contribute and that I'm useless but insists that I explain the outline and answer questions so I'd like an explanation about that, Paige. This morning we worked on our presentation mostly. We put together slides and got images ready. My best friend was on campus today for a college and major exposition or whatever the program is so we got lunch and I told her all about the internship and the wonderful people I've met. I got very into detail about the Lunch Bunch, I was very excited to tell her all about them. I also told her about my project and Paige, Dave, and Roger. After she left I went back inside and worked a little more on the presentation. We don't have as much data for the palimpsest as we did for the Selden Map so that section is going to be much shorter, or at least it is for now. I...

During the morning meeting we went over a few more abstracts and Matt asked some trick questions about them. We briefly talked about the symposium tomorrow but unfortunately, I can't go. Paige and I are getting through the data Roger gave us and we have decent results for them. They're almost presentation worthy. I've been working on the Ambrosiana/Jubilees section, mostly the introductory slides until we decide what we want to put in. We're waiting for a response from Todd Hanneken, the guy who gave us the project, to tell us the significance of the palimpsest and if there is any particular reason he wants us to work on it. I got a short answer from Roger and it was "because Todd wanted you to" but I know that there is more behind it. Paige has some really good results and I think that our presentation will be mostly about the Selden Map, there's a lot more information about it and we were asked to do less with the Jubilees. The morning meeting was standard, we did a few more outlines and some people gave feedback. Paige was back today and I was so happy to see her, I am no longer alone!!! She has been making image cubes all day while I got some useful results, finally. Five of us went to see Chris Gloudeman's presentation on the third floor in room 3215. He leaves for home on Saturday and I'm really sad to see him go. At least David Lewis is back from Chicago. I started putting our final presentation together and it's not half bad. I took out the insignificant slides and put in a few about the Jubilees and Ambrosiana Library. We're trying to get it down to about 50 slides so we'll have to make some tough decisions about what to cut. The data Roger gave us Amb_C73_001-004 are all really good. The narrowbands show some good information but the fluorescence doesn't have much on it.

The morning meeting wasn't too long. We went over two outlines and then we were cut loose. I spend my morning making image cubes and calibrating them just to be able to look at images correctly. My afternoon has consisted of puzzles and loading bars. I have gotten a few results but not all of them are useful. I have ran PCI, PCA, and SAM on two sections and there results haven't been promising. I knew that the first section I'm working on didn't have a lot of information so I'm not too concerned. After I get past the first few files then I'll have things I can use. Paige is back tomorrow so I'll ask her what she thinks about the outline and then we can start piecing our presentation together. I'm thrilled to see her, it's been so lonely without her. It's just been me and my computer.. and also the few results I have. Here is one of my useless results along with a semi useful one. Today was Joe's only day at work this week, Matt is taking over the morning meetings starting tomorrow. We talked about the outlines and Joe asked us to look over everyone's to get an idea of what theirs is so we don't try to critique it the first time we look at it. I went to the PhD Dissertation Defense at 10 today. The topic was the evolution of massive black hole binaries in rotating stellar nuclei and it implications for gravitational wave detection. Good thing there was a paper in the reading room stating the exact topic or else I definitely would not have remembered much more than "massive black hole" and "gravitational wave detection". The defense was interesting but really confusing and not to mention complex. I can't say that I understood much of it but I did enjoy it and I'm glad I went. I've been making image cubes for Roger all day. I also got a few PCI results and a few Overlay results that I'll add in later. I forgot to men...

This morning has mainly consisted of making our outline and trying to find Roger. He isn't a quick man but he hides pretty well. We got some notes about it and we've been trying to edit it to make it as wonderful as possible. Paige is leaving at 3 and I'm not sure what I'm doing when she leaves. Maybe cry? I'll post about it later. We plan to start thinking about the final presentation and putting images together for slides. I also want to copy our Selden Map presentation and then cut out the unnecessary slides, the ones that don't show too much information. Paige has been on the phone with her mom, Molly so I'm trying to make friends. I think it's going well. The rest of the day was mainly picking images for our final presentation and editing our outline after receiving more feedback.
